Daniel Pontet nació en Montevideo, Uruguay, en 1957 y reside en Miami, Florida desde 1991. Se formó como artista plástico, en Uruguay, con el acuarelista y maestro Esteban Garino –que le enseñó los secretos del dibujo y la composición- y con los artistas Américo Sposito y Héctor Laborde quiénes le transmitieron la magia del color y un particular énfasis en el espacio y las formas. Realizó cursos de Historia del Arte en la Facultad de Humanidades, Universidad de la República del Uruguay. Además, estudió serigrafía, fotografía y computación
como un complemento a su educación en el arte.

En su primera etapa, que puede ser adscrita al círculo del expresionismo o de corte neo-expresionista, Pontet usa el dibujo como un elemento fundamental. Valiéndose de él, abriendo y cerrando espacios, organiza en el plano su refugio, su equilibrio, incluyendo toda su gracia y toda su fuerza, todo su drama y su lirismo. En este período, se dedicó con vehemencia y fuerza expresiva a traducir en la tela todo un mundo de personajes indiferentes, impávidos y sin horizontes. Pontet agita a estos personajes meditabundos con una ráfaga expresionista, dónde subyace una gran reflexión sobre la condición humana. También crea consonancias rítmicas y cromáticas con estos motivos. En las series de este período se destacan el dibujo acabado, las composiciones meditadas, estructuras con rigor matemático, deformaciones y alargamientos premeditados, así como el uso de una paleta policroma rica en tonos y matices.

Hoy, inmerso en un nuevo período plástico llamado “Metamorfosis” Pontet está re-creando parte de ese enigmático mundo de los símbolos. Desde el realismo a la abstracción, la actual propuesta de Pontet –henchida de sentimientos, pensamientos, meditaciones, y no exenta de lirismo- es eminentemente plástica. Sus composiciones lejos de ser descriptivas, narrativas o literarias, son verdaderos registros plásticos de pensamientos volcados en una superficie bi o tridimensional. Estos trabajos o “collages” lucen como verdaderos mapas donde podemos encontrar un camino para pensar, para reflexionar sobre nuestra vida espiritual. Estas series recientes también se caracterizan por colores extraídos de la tierra –desde un marrón hasta un rojo óxido- y objetos incrustados –llaves, clavos, tuercas, telas, hilos- que se convierten en símbolos, en metáforas. Cada símbolo lleva, en sí mismo, un profundo mensaje espiritual.

Daniel Pontet comenzó a exhibir en 1975 y participó en más de 60 exposiciones de arte. Pontet obtuvo diversos premios y reconocimientos con sus trabajos y su creatividad no ha llegado a un fin. El esfuerzo y la devoción son sus más preciadas herramientas junto a su autenticidad.

Como el escritor chileno Antonio Landauro afirmara acerca de Daniel Pontet: “Demás esta decir que siempre y en toda ocasión este creador –como auténtico artista- se expresa a sí mismo, ya sea comprendido, lo sea sino en parte, y a veces no lo sea en absoluto”

Daniel Pontet was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, South America, in 1957 and has resided in Miami, Florida since 1991. He developed artistically in Uruguay, under watercolor painter and art teacher Esteban Garino – who taught him the art of drawing and composition - and under artists Americo Sposito and Hector Laborde, who instilled into him the magic of color and a particular emphasis on space and shapes. He also completed courses in Art History at the School of Humanities of the University of the Republic of Uruguay. Furthermore, he studied silkscreen, photography, and computer graphics as a complement to his art education.

The earliest stage of Pontet’s work can be placed within the expressionist and the neo expressionist circles and during this time he uses drawing as a fundamental element. He opens and closes spaces and organizes his balance and refuge in the canvass with grace and strength, as well as drama and lyricism. In this period, he devotes most of his energy and power of expression to depicting a world of indifferent, dauntless, and forlorn characters. Pontet stirs these meditative beings with an expressionist glare, manifesting a deep and underlying reflection on the human condition. He also creates unique rhythmical and chromatic consonances throughout these motifs. Pontet’s early series share outstanding traits characterized by accomplished drawing, well thought-out compositions, mathematically precise structures, distortions and deliberate elongations, as well as the use of a rich polychrome palette of tones and hues.

Today, immersed in a new plastic period called “Metamorphosis,” Pontet is re-creating part of an enigmatic world of symbols. From realism to abstraction, Pontet’s current work – teeming with feelings, thoughts, meditations, and not lacking in
lyricism - is eminently plastic. His compositions, far from being descriptive, narrative or literary, are true plastic records of thoughts expressed in two or three-dimensional surfaces. These works of art or “collages” look like accurate maps where we can find a path to think as well as reflect about our own spiritual life. This late series is also characterized by colors extracted from the soil – from brown to red oxide – and incrusted objects – keys, nails, washers, piece of fabrics, threads - which become powerful symbols and metaphors. Each symbol carries a profound spiritual message.

Daniel Pontet started exhibiting in 1975 and has participated in more than 60 art shows. He has received several prizes and acknowledgments and continues to show that his creativity has found no end. Effort and devotion are his most precious tools along with truthfulness.

As the Chilean writer Antonio Landauro once said about Daniel Pontet:

“It goes without saying that this creative artist, like all genuine artists, always attains self-expression, whether he is understood, half understood, or
not at all.”
